A Designer’s Guide to the Perfect Guestroom
Preparing a guest bedroom presents a unique opportunity to create a welcoming retreat that combines comfort and care. Whether your guests are staying for just one night or for an extended period, a well-designed space will help them feel at home from the moment they arrive. When our firm designs a guest bedroom, we always ask, “Who will be your primary guests?” Are they adults, grandchildren, or friends? Knowing this helps us set the right tone for the space.
Begin with Comfort
Every great guest room starts with a comfortable bed. Choose a supportive mattress and layer it with crisp cotton or linen sheets, plush pillows, and a soft throw. The goal is to create a bed that feels like a quiet invitation to relax and stay awhile. For this guest bedroom, we laid a cozy, plush rug under a natural woven bed, with super-soft linens and bedding.
Keep the Palette Soft and Soothing
A calming color palette sets the mood for the space. I enjoy using coastal-inspired neutrals—such as warm whites, soft taupes, and muted blues—to create a serene and timeless backdrop. These tones evoke a restful atmosphere while complementing any home style. For this particular design, our clients specified that it would be for their adult guests. We aimed to achieve a spa-like vibe with a coastal feel.
Light the Room Beautifully
Good lighting is essential for creating a warm and inviting atmosphere. Incorporate bedside lamps for reading, an overhead fixture for balance, and use soft, warm bulbs to produce a cozy glow. A layered lighting plan not only enhances functionality but also makes the room feel welcoming. Pay attention to small details, such as fresh flowers, scented candles, and bedside lighting, to make every guest feel special.
Add Thoughtful Touches and Offer Little Luxuries
Fresh flowers, a carafe of water with glasses, or a small tray with tea and snacks can greatly enhance your guests' experience. A note with your Wi-Fi password or a selection of local magazines adds a personal and thoughtful touch that guests appreciate. Providing a cozy throw, extra blankets, plush towels, and perhaps a robe makes the space feel inviting and complete. Additionally, including a phone charger and a subtle room fragrance can give the room a fresh and refined finish.
Keep It Elegant, Not Overdone
Style the room with intention. A few carefully chosen pieces—a beautiful artwork, a textured accent pillow, or a statement mirror—can elevate the space without making it feel cluttered. Aim for an open, light, and serene atmosphere. Preparing a guest room involves more than just decor; it's about creating a welcoming environment. When design and comfort blend seamlessly, your guests will feel cared for in every detail.
