The Art of Sourcing | Luxury Interior Design Secrets

When people think about interior design, they often picture beautiful furnishings, perfectly layered rooms, and luxurious finishes. What they don't see is one of the most important parts of the design process: sourcing.

Sourcing is the art of discovering the pieces that give a home its personality. It is where a project moves beyond simply furnishing a space and begins telling a story.

The right painting. An extraordinary light fixture. A sculptural chair. A handcrafted vessel. A vintage table with history. These are the elements that create warmth, character, and a distinctive point of view.

Sourcing Is More Than Shopping

A beautifully designed home is not created from a catalog alone. Every project deserves pieces that feel collected rather than purchased all at once. The goal is to create interiors that are timeless, layered, and deeply personal. For me, sourcing is an ongoing pursuit. Inspiration is everywhere if you are willing to look. I spend countless hours exploring: fine art galleries, artist studios, antique markets, boutique furniture showrooms, lighting vendors, sculpture gardens, small independent shops, and international design fairs.

Sometimes, the perfect piece comes from a renowned gallery; other times, it can be found tucked away in a tiny shop that I almost didn’t enter. That’s the beauty of sourcing—you never know where you’ll discover the item that can transform an entire room.

What I Look For

I rarely search for "more furniture." Instead, I look for pieces that have a strong presence—items that really catch your eye. Perhaps it’s:

  • An oversized abstract painting that anchors an entire room.

  • A sculptural chair that feels more like art than furniture.

  • A handcrafted ceramic vessel with remarkable texture.

  • A vintage bronze sculpture.

  • A lamp with a silhouette that sparks conversation.

  • A beautifully aged console showcasing exceptional craftsmanship.

These are the pieces that evoke emotion and become the soul of the room.

Developing Your Sourcing Muscle

Sourcing, much like creativity, is a skill that improves with practice. It’s not an innate ability; rather, it develops through observation, curiosity, and repetition. Each visit to a gallery, antique store, showroom, or design market trains your eye to recognize quality, craftsmanship, proportion, and originality.

Over time, you start to instinctively notice critical aspects such as balance, material quality, authentic craftsmanship, patina, color relationships, artistic composition, visual weight, and emotional impact. Eventually, these instincts become some of your most valuable design tools. After years of sourcing, I have learned to trust that instinct.

Every Great Interior Begins With Curiosity

Sourcing isn't just about picking out beautiful items; it's about learning to see the beauty that others might overlook. This process takes patience, keen observation, experience, and trust in your instincts. Over time, your eye becomes more discerning, and your confidence grows. Each extraordinary piece you find adds another layer to creating a home that feels personal, timeless, and unforgettable. The most beautiful interiors aren’t simply put together; they are thoughtfully curated.
