Accessories Are the Jewelry of Interior Design
A beautifully designed room truly shines with thoughtful attention to detail. I see accessories as the jewelry of interior design; just like the perfect earrings or handbag can enhance an outfit, the right decor can elevate a room from simply stylish to uniquely personal and memorable.
While furniture provides a solid foundation and architecture shapes the structure, accessories imbue the space with character. They are the final touches that transform a room into a warm, inviting haven, making it feel vibrant and truly lived-in. The art of accessorizing creates spaces that inspire.
The Art of the Finishing Layer
Accessories should never feel like an afterthought; they play a crucial role in shaping the overall design narrative. Items such as a collection of books on a coffee table, a sculptural object on a console, a beautiful bowl on a kitchen island, or a piece of art casually leaning against a wall can all add depth and character to a space. Even simple elements like a pair of lamps or a thoughtfully placed vase can create balance and visual interest.
The key is to know when to stop. Effective accessorizing doesn't mean filling every surface. I feel it is important to embrace ample negative space. The aim is to create moments that invite the eye to pause, explore, and discover.
Think in Layers
One of my favorite ways to accessorize is to think in layers. Start with something substantial, such as a lamp, artwork, a large vase, or a sculptural piece. Then add smaller elements that complement the main piece without competing for attention. Varying height, texture, shape, and scale creates movement in your display. For example, you might place a stack of books beneath a decorative object, use a beautiful tray paired with a small vase, or mix smooth and textured materials to create an effortlessly appealing vignette.
Don’t be afraid of contrast. Pair a polished surface with something organic, or place a sculptural piece next to something soft. Mixing contemporary pieces with vintage or collected items can also add interest. This tension is often what makes a room captivating.
Scale Matters
In interior design, scale is crucial. A small item placed alone on a large console can be easily overlooked, while a group of tiny accessories packed onto a table may look cluttered. The right proportions convey a sense of purpose. Sometimes, a single oversized sculptural piece can make a bolder statement than several smaller items. This is where a designer's expertise truly shines. It’s not just about the items you choose for a room; it’s also about their placement, what you put next to them, and what you intentionally leave out.
The Final Touch
Accessories are often the final touch in a room, but they shouldn’t be considered the least important element. These details soften the space, add warmth, spark conversation, and transform a beautifully designed home into a personal sanctuary. Just as jewelry completes an outfit, accessories enhance an interior. Sometimes, that perfect bracelet, pair of earrings, or handbag is what elevates the entire look.
